Chania
Chania is a town located on the northwest coast of the Greek island of Crete. According to Homer, the town is built on the site of ancient Kidonia, which was one of the most important cities of Crete [1]. The town has a rich history influenced by various civilizations that have occupied the island, including the ancient Minoans, the Byzantine Empire, the Venetians and the Ottoman Empire [1]. During the Venetian rule in the 13th-17th centuries, Chania was an important commercial center and flourished as a significant agricultural region. The Venetians left an impressive architectural legacy in the town, including the Venetian lighthouse at the port, the beautiful two-story houses in the Chania Old Town, the Clock Tower as well as many Byzantine churches and mosques. One of the famous personalities that was born in Chania is Eleftherios Venizelos, one of the greatest statesmen of Greece who played a significant role in the creation of the Greek republic [1].
